What to Do in Case of Flooding

  • Turn off power in the flooded area. If that’s not possible, unplug all electrical appliances, shut off the water and gas supply, and raise curtains or open blinds.
  • Exercise caution. If you have any doubts about the structural integrity of the building, you and others should not remain inside;
  • Try to identify the flooding cause: a leaky roof, storm damage, open windows or doors during heavy rain, or plumbing failures like burst pipes, sewer issues, or leaking appliance hoses.

If you identify the water source, it’s crucial to shut it off immediately to prevent further flooding. In some cases, simply closing a window or door is enough, while in others, you may need to shut off the main valve, which is usually located in the basement.

  • Notify your neighbors. Flooding often happens due to uncontrollable circumstances, but if the water is coming from an upstairs neighbor, inform them as soon as possible—they may not be aware of the issue. Also, be sure to warn your downstairs neighbors so they can take immediate action to minimize potential damage.
  • Document the damage and contact the housing authority or property management. To assess the extent of the damage, proper documentation is required. Ensure high-quality evidence by taking clear photos or videos of the affected areas, capturing the entire room if possible. Prepare a detailed inventory listing all damaged items and the extent of their damage. If a neighbor is responsible for the incident, try to have them sign the report to acknowledge the damage.

What NOT to Do in Case of Flooding

  • Do not use electrical appliances. Avoid plugging in or turning on any devices if the outlets may have been exposed to water, as this poses a serious risk of electric shock.
  • Do not use a heater to dry the space. Air temperatures above 25–30°C promote mold and bacterial growth. Instead, ensure proper ventilation to maintain continuous airflow throughout the drying process.
  • Avoid contact with floodwater. It may be heavily contaminated with waste, hazardous chemicals, and disease-causing pathogens, posing a serious health risk if it comes into contact with your skin or enters your body.
  • Do not leave wet items indoors. Fabric and paper materials take a long time to dry and can remain damp for an extended period. This can damage surfaces they come into contact with and create a breeding ground for mold, which may spread throughout the space. Separate and dry all wet items as soon as possible, or dispose of them if drying is not feasible.
  • Do not touch stretch ceilings or walls. Sagging ceilings and bulging walls may indicate a significant accumulation of water that is barely being held back. Mishandling these water-damaged structures could cause them to collapse, releasing hundreds of liters of water into the room.
  • Do not rush into repairs. Many construction materials, such as water-based plasters and adhesives, significantly increase indoor humidity during drying. Conducting repairs in a poorly dried space can push humidity levels to the maximum, leading to condensation and mold growth on surfaces. Ensure the area is fully dried before starting any renovation work.

Water Extraction

Rapid removal of the maximum amount of water after flooding is a key step in minimizing damage. The most serious risks involve structural damage to load-bearing elements such as the foundation, walls, and ceilings, as well as soil destabilization, which can compromise the building’s integrity and even lead to collapse.

Prolonged exposure to water causes extensive destruction of building materials, corrosion of metal structures, damage to utility systems, and irreversible deterioration of flooring, furniture, and interior elements.

High-capacity electric drainage pumps are used for water extraction, capable of removing water from depths of up to 7 meters while leaving only a 1mm layer on the floor. This remaining moisture is then completely removed using specialized wet vacuums.

Water extraction is a far more efficient method of moisture removal than air dehumidification. A drainage pump with a capacity of 14 tons per hour extracts water in its liquid state, whereas dehumidifiers collect only water vapor from the air, requiring significant energy for condensation. As a result, dehumidifiers have a much lower capacity—typically around 50 liters per day.
